I have been packaging sagemath, "integrated" in Mandriva since late
sage 3.x. There is also sage-on-gentoo. Not sure if other distro does
it "integrated" in the distro (MIB did it based on my sagemath-4.x
packages, MIB stands for Mandriva International Backports as I
only package to Mandriva cooker development version).

It would add a lot more work for sage to support different versions
of components, but like it or not, sage developers are better
at fixing sage to work with different versions, e.g. I had lots of
trouble due to most times using python-2.6 and sage using
python-2.5, or using python-2.7 and sage using python-2.6.
But there are other issues, for example, ipython in my package
I just build the version that works with sage, and set it to
$PATH and or $PYTHONPATH

Recently I started packaging several R- packages; R in Mandriva was
outdated, so, I updated to R-2.14.1, and while at that, also imported
over 330 R packages in the distro, and plan to do more, so that I
should solve most issues users would not be expected to fix themselves.
R appears to work a lot better with recent software in distros. But R
packages are more like python modules...
