Ticket #12221 deals with unsetting the TERM environment variable in pexpect child programs. This should prevent those children from doing fancy stuff with the terminal, breaking the pexpect interface.
I consider this ticket a *beta-blocker* (pun totally not intented), in the sense that I cannot even release a beta without that patch included. I literally cannot, since the removal of a character "alpha" -> "beta" triggers this bug in the merger script. Therefore, sage-5.0.beta0 *will* include #12221, reviewed or not.
