(Just browse the Best Buy website and you will see that most standard laptops have at least 4 gigs of ram and come with Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.) I suspect that new computers will probably only have 32 bit Windows installed either because they are cheap netbooks which come with Windows 7 starter or because someone has specifically requested something 32 bit for legacy compatibility reasons. I've been puzzled for a while about why Ubuntu encourages the 32 bit version as the recommended download. There used to be some problems with flash on 64 bits, but I think those problems are pretty much taken care of now, and I haven't come across any other software that I want to run that has problems with 64 bit linux. (Not that I really _want_ to run flash.) So I think that there should be a 64 bit version, and we should encourage anyone who can use a 64 bit version to use the 64 bit version, and we should look forward to the day, possibly only a few years away, when Sage can drop support for 32 bit operating systems. (Though maybe this day is more than a few years away, since ARM is lagging behind in adopting 64 bit, and more and more people may be interested in running Sage on ARM as time goes on.) -- To post to this group, send an email to sage-devel@googlegroups.com To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to sage-devel+unsubscr...@googlegroups.com For more options, visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/sage-devel URL: http://www.sagemath.org
