I had to take hawk down for an extended period of time, as I needed to run some
CPU intensive Windows software, and I currently have no better machine than hawk.
I've upgraded hawk to 24 GB of RAM too - which actually not supported by Sun in
this workstation, but seems to work OK.
I'm looking to get a machine with more cores and more RAM at some point in the
near future, though I've not actually decided what machine will run Solaris, and
what machine will run Windows. It might depend on the noise level generated by
that machine, and so whether it needs to be put in the garage, or can be put in
the house. Hawk is very quite, but servers tend to generate a lot of noise, but
if one wants a lot of RAM, a server seems the way to go.
I recently bought an IBM server from eBay
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/140662030927
(2 x quad core 3.16 GHz Xeon processors), but the thing had a fault, and had to
be returned. I've also discovered that machine that take 32 GB or more of RAM
tend to use fully buffered ECC RAM, which is a *lot* more expensive than
unbuffered ECC RAM.
