There's also http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/1173 with a different approach. I'm fine with letting #1173 fade in favour of #11948; I learned enough during the process to contribute to a "How to add a new function to Sage" tutorial (hint hint to someone who knows more about what's necessary than me) so the time was well-spent. mpmath offers a lot of nice arbitrary-precision functions, and I see no reason that we shouldn't wrap the lot of them once some implementation is blessed as the canonical one.
