Huge +1.  Using the word "lift" for precisely what I used it for (in
the function under consideration) is very common in certain areas of
mathematical research.  I didn't even think twice about it when I
introduced that function.   That said, you have a valid point about
"lift' not being sufficiently evocative for newbies.
