I might be a bit slow, but I can't figure out exactly what you want to change it *to*? In any event, a (needs-work) patch at http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/9773 tries to implement all finitely-generated abelian groups (additive and multiplicative) from one common class, which will by default, enforce some consistency. This mostly rides on finitely-generated modules over PIDs (FGP_Module class?), so I would suggest that whatever you do, consistency with the module code could make the most sense.
