I wonder if the fact there are few with a software background as part of the
Sage project could go against it for Google Summer of Code. Students are likely
to learn more about programming from mentors who are themselves programmers. I
note that Automake, GCC, Iluminos all get accepted. All those projects are going
to be primary developed by those with a software background, which might be more
useful to students who want to become programmers or software engineers.
If it was a "Google Summer of Mathematics", then the situation might well be
reversed. I could then imagine Sage having far more chance, and pieces of
software like GCC, Automake and Iluminos not having a chance.
Just a thought. I don't really know. It would be good to get some feedback why
Sage is not succeeding. Without knowing why, it's very difficult to address the
problem.
