My recent work has been in to speed up a lot of modular symbols related code, especially the linear algebra it depends on. Not everything is up to standars to get it into sage but should be in the near future.

I'm quite happy that your code is good at this specific case, since this is the case I really need for my master thesis which will be related to williams quartic torsion calculations. When working with Gamma1(p) for p prime and between 44 to 272 the denominator 2 occurs only for the primes 89, 239 and 257.
