I think that in physics Mma is used fairly heavily, at least in
certain circles.  I don't know how much of that is outside academia,
presumably a fair amount.

I think it if was used outside academia a lot, there would be more jobs requiring Mathematica skills - would you not agree?

I've seen a pie chart from Wolfram Research, where they indicated how much the takeup was in particular industries. Finance was the largest sector, which seems to correlate with my job hunts when I have searched for the term.

Of those wanting Mathematica, they are always and/or MATLAB.

I'm personally yet to be convinced there is much demand for Mathematica outside academia.
