As I pointed out earlier today in a comment on one of the tickets
concerned, it's highly unlikely that anyone's going to review the
finite field patches in their current state, because the whole lot is
too big a target, and the individual tickets don't work on their own.

I've spent the last half hour playing around backporting the necessary
bits of #8333 and #8334 needed to get #7883 working so I can review
it. I have now done this, and I am about to give it a positive review.
I will look at #8333 next; but #8334 is currently very broken.
