Thanks Tim, I tried that but I still get the import error. However if
I use this shell:
cd '/home/me/sage/sage-4.5.2/spkg/build/sagenb-0.8.2' && '/home/me/
sage/sage-4.5.2/sage' -sh
then I get a working notebook.

I made a .bash_profile:
SAGE_ROOT="/home/me/sage/sage-4.5.2"
PATH="$PATH:$SAGE_ROOT:$SAGE_ROOT/local/bin"
export SAGE_ROOT
export PATH

So what is the shell giving me that my profile isn't?
