Thank you Francois,

it seems that gives me some hope. The only barrier to testing this is
now to get the power supply fixed! I'd not switched the machine on for
many years. Then when I powered it up a few times over the course of a
weekend it was fine. The next thing the LCD display showed an
"40110001" error code, which indicates a PSU fault. I'll take a look
at fixing it myself (very hard with switch mode power supplies), but
if not. look for one on eBay I think.
