See also #9445. Looks like it's back to the drawing board for this code.
Is this something that first appeared in the 4.5 series, and therefore, as
release manager, something you can simply not merge?
Or is it something that was merged in 4.4.4 or earlier, so will need a ticket
created to sort out the bug?
