If this is opensolaris, then the best place to start would be to build
Sage on disk.math.washington.edu, since I have access to that machine.

I tried. You will need to update the build tools on there I think. I got several
failures that I don't get with later versions of gcc and binutils.
I created you an account on my machine and sent you details via email. If you
look in your home directory, there is a complete build, which just dumps core at
startup. Perhaps you can try to debug it there if you don't have time to set up
the tools on 'disk.math'.
