This particular problem may be Solaris specific, though I have absolutely no
understanding what that might be so.
It's clear to me that under some circumstances Sage can have adverse
interactions with other versions of Python on a system. Under exactly what
circumstances I do not know, but I'm not the first to see this sort of unwelcome
interaction. Here is one under Linux, but I've seen others too.

Once stage is somehow mixing the versions of python up, it becomes much more
difficult to predict what will happen.

The important thing is that it tried to write to directories where the system
python (/usr/lib) is installed, rather than in the Sage area. If someone tries
to build Sage as root (and plenty of people are either blissfully unaware of the
risks, or chose to ignore them), though could end up really screwing their
system up.

Basically, bits in Sage often "pick up" things like python from outside the Sage
directory tree, and act on them rather than their own version.
