If you look at the thread "Test your Python build" you will see

* Everyone so far gets a test failure of "distutils" if they use my Python package at

which allows Python to be tested.

* Adam web says he does not get this failure with a plain python 2.6.5


If you then look at that thread

"gcc_fake in numpy - I've wasted countless hours on this!"

you will see I got frustrated with the gcc_fake in numpy. Reading Numpy's spkg-install I see this, just before the hack with the fake gcc.

# numpy's distutils is buggy and runs a conftest without
# taking CFLAGS into account. With 64 bit OSX this results
# in *boom*

*Perhaps* (and I've not looked at this yet), the reason Numpy needs a fake gcc is that really the distutils in python is not working in Sage.

I'm sure I've seen other things mentioned in Sage that are believed to be due to distutils.
