At least 1 GB of RAM is required to run the doctest without usually
getting a "not enough memory" error.

The last time I checked, which is over 1 year ago, I was able to run
the doctest on a system with 512 MB of RAM. To do so, I booted into a
text-based session, i.e. run level 3, built Sage and doctest with the
option "-long".
