If I knew a way to rework these, I would try to help.

I just don't understand the new symbolic function code well enough
to make the changes required for Piecewise.

AbelianGroups I think will rely on (William Stein's?) code for lattices.

It seems like Rob Beezer is organizing the PermutationGroups
rewrite. The 5th section of the "Group theory in Sage" paper with David Kohel
might mention some useful ideas as well.

IIRC, the reason why the Riemann-Roch implementation was broken before
is because Singular was buggy. Has this been fixed?

All this code is probably 4 years old, at least.
