Iceland was about the only country that would tolerate the late Bobby Fischer
(chess player). Since he played his most famous match there (vs Boris Spassky),
, they granted him Icelandic citizenship so he could flee Japan, and escape
extradition to the USA.
According to a biography I'm reading about him, he believed the Jews wanted to
kill all African Elephants because the elephant's trunks reminded them of
uncircucsed penises! A brilliant chess player, but some very odd views. But in
Iceland his views were ok.
However, what happens in Iceland:

doesn't seem to stay there:

Thus, fleeing anywhere from the UK at the moment seems to be a
problem. Something about planes requiring clean air to operate. :-)

According to the news today, consideration is being given to the raising of the
concentration of ash permitted before airspace is closed.
I recall many years ago being at an airport in Germany (forget which one),
awaiting to take off to land at Heathrow airport. A stewardess came around,
offering passengers a copy of the Evening Standard (English newspaper). As I
flicked through the pages, there was a big article about the dangers to aircraft
of large birds around Heathrow Airport! Great to read that, as I was about to
take off for Heathrow.
