That looks very sensible to me. I created a ticket for it, but don't have time to do it now.

sage -spkg gd-2.0.35.p4
sage -f gd-2.0.35.p4.spkg

and then rebuild sage.
Not sure it will help, but perhaps...

Actually, your log looks fishy, as spkg-install says
"# We explicitly disable X support..."
by it still is being linked against lots of X-related things...

Probably an example of another broken spkg-install. I know the check for X in R's spkg-install is broken, as the method used may have worked on one platform, but not others. R's spkg-install needs some work before I would consider it acceptable.
