Minh's comments sound like a good approach to me, and I'm happy to assist David with reviewing.
It might still be nice to have a method for Graphs that returns an "underlying" digraph with an "arbitrary" orientation. But I can't come up with a convincing argument/use-case at the moment. And there is no reason for that to be part of this, it could be done separately.
