The problem with crle is that it's system-wide, as you point out.

The only documentaion I can find is "info gcc inv spec".  This states
that there's a builtin default which can be overridden on the command
line.  This makes it less use than I thought (I was under the impression
that it loaded the specs from near the cc1/cc1obj/cc1plus executables).

I agree that the format is somewhat opaque.
