I attempted it and was told that apt-get couldn't find it. I then did some searching and found that it was part of binutils and that it was already installed on my system. In the past Ubuntu has usually given me hints of which package might contain a command that I wanted, but in this case it didn't. It took a little internet searching, but not too much before I realized that I had it on my computer already. Because of the way that line was written I was thinking that all I had to do was apt-get install that whole list, but GCC in caps and ranlib both gave me problems. I wrote a message to the list pointing out that changing those, or at least a note about Ubuntu users could help people in the future.

Until now I assumed that the GNU tools were in widespread, if not ubiquitous use with open source operating systems. Now it's obvious that I made a bad assumption. On another note - I never removed the SAGE CHECK line in the readme, because it wasn't clear to me if it should just be removed or a note put in discouraging its use in most cases. But I can leave that for the regular developers who are already taking care of the readme.
