I have written up some instructions on how to patch an spkg. The instructions are provided as an answer to the question, "How do I patch an spkg?" in the Development FAQ: http://wiki.sagemath.org/devel/DevelFAQ I hope you find those instructions useful. However, I welcome your feedback on improving the documentation for patching spkg's.
