Hi ( :-) )
To customize sagenb I make a copy of the spkg out of the sage tree.
After customization, I install it by (if I can remember) like a python 
package.

This question is quite important: for example, we want to modify the 
html pages to add/suppress possibilities... a description of how to do 
this would be great.
