It should be noted however that a lot of the packages in Sage do not use these, or use them properly. CC and CXX for example are ignored by several packages Atlas http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/7048 Flint http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/7024 Sage library http://trac.sagemath.org/sage_trac/ticket/6595 to name but a few. Few packages use RANLIB, LD, LN. Many do not use CFLAGS or CXXFLAGS. Few use SHAREDFLAGS. Some packages unset 'MAKE'. So some caution needs to be used in the use of these.
