There is no vmware image. The vmware instructions are just for reference and they were used some time ago. But you do not need them at all. If you download the virtualbox image, you have a zip file. Extract it and there is the readme once again - then it makes more sense. The idea behind a virtual appliance, as it is used there, is to be "open" and allow the same images to be used across different virtual environment engines. But, I don't know if this is tested of if there are any problems with that ... for now, this virtualbox image is our top download and there are nearly no problem reports with that one. Therefore, it has the best "quality".
