I guess it would be good if you could get some help. Perhaps you know
some mailing lists or newsgroups where FreeBSD people hang out.

There is a mailing list called 'time-nuts'. A lot of the people on there
are serious scientists, doing heavy maths. There is some reason they
often use FreeBSD - something about how it handles time keeping better
than other operating systems. I know one of the people on there is a
serious FreeBSD developer. I could ask on there if you wanted - or you
could ask yourself. I know a few of the people on there.

(I had once planned to build a unit which would give my 1830's pendulum
clock, the accuracy of a rubidium clock. Never got around to it though.

The basic idea is to generate a magnetic field at the actual frequency
needed for the pendulum clock to keep very good time. With a small
magnet on the pendulum, the pendulum will eventually sync to the
electronic clock. But somehow I lost interest. It's a nice clock, but I
wish it had the accuracy of a modern quartz clock. The rubidium would
have made it much better.

There are tons of people on the time-nuts list with cesium clocks, and
one guy with a hydrogen maser. I gather at some point in time (pun
intended), the second will be redefined in terms of oscillations on
hydrogen, as it is more stable than cesium).

But seriously, it is a possible place to ask for some help. You might
find some have functions for the sort of thing you are looking for.

I'm going to ask on the Solaris newsgroups for some help in porting to
Sun Studio. It will be somewhat easier for people to start on that, once
a version builds with gcc easily.
