This was only meant to be a temporary hack to reduce the chances you
would accidentally hit the back button and corrupt worksheet state.
The real fix is (1) to make navigating away from a page more
controlled, and (2) automatically synchronize the state of the browser
and server's view of the worksheet.  That's already planned. So
hopefully, you'll just see the behavior you don't like above vanish
soon-ish.
