I have some good news on this front. This morning I got mayavi working offscreen on bsd.math.w.e. I did this with Ondrej's femhub package that we worked on during the sprints at scipy09. Once it worked, I redid everything to make sure it was reproducible and was able to produce two mayavi images remotely. Right now the packaging is a bit of a mess since I manually rebuild python using --enable-framework and then used modified spkg-installs for vtk and mayavi. These should be trivial to make into fresh spkgs and I'm discussing this off-list with Ondrej. I think we should be in a position to get SPD and femhub working with this setup very soon.
