If you could, I'd like to investigate this.

Ideally if the flags for the position independant code (-fPIC with
GCC) and making shared libraries (-shared on GCC) could be supplied as
arguments in some way, then a test for the compiler will allow these
to be set for any compiler - GNU, Sun, IBM, HP etc.
