OK.
In which case the top README.txt needs updating, as it currently says:
SUPPORTED COMPILERS:
* Sage builds with GCC >= 3.x and GCC >= 4.1.x.
We should add a note that gcc 4.0.1 can be used on OSX.
That still leave the case of gcc 4.0.0 being currently accepted, yet
that is well known to be very buggy.
