Dear John,
when i had problems with doc testing outside the path, someone
(mabshoff?) pointed out that i need to do
export SAGEPATH=`pwd`
in the directory where the to-be-tested files are (in my case, it
was .pyx, not .py).
Your problem sounds related, so perhaps SAGEPATH helps.
