Weird... actually it turns out that "import" fails but "from ...
import ..." works -- tab completion recognizes the existence of
dateutil.

import matplotlib.dateutil
returns an error

but

sage: from matplotlib import dateutil
sage: dir(dateutil)

['__author__',
 '__builtins__',
 '__doc__',
 '__file__',
 '__license__',
 '__name__',
 '__path__',
 '__version__']
