Did you ever look at the enthought tool suite?
Interactive 2D and 3D plots (vtk based). Chaco and Mayavi2.
Mayavi2 has a module mlab which has some matlab features:

I made some experimental spkgs (linux only for the moment), see:

Installing the spkgs is not for the faint harted :(!
