Yeah, I was aiming more for obnoxious than subtle. :-) > There was a serious screw up when they tried to > redo their whole interface in Java, as I was told by a representative. That's one reason I mentioned the jEdit text editor: it's written entirely in Java, and it feels snappy compared to a lot of C++ programs I've used. The guys who develop that have made some very good design decisions. > There are two main reasons I switched to sage, besides frustration > with other software: I didn't mean to turn this into a "reasons to switch" thread; I was really trying to make a statement about syntax highlighting & how it can be done both well & badly. Since I've opened that box: I switched for many of the reasons that people have mentioned for switching to Sage. Another one was that I could look at the source code. Back when I used the "nameless" CAS, I could look at some code if I figured out how, but it wasn't exactly encouraged, and & I'm pretty sure I found a few real bugs whose code I couldn't look up. The most I could do was report them, and hope they'd update it without expecting me to fork over more money for the next version. With Sage I'm able to look at the code & have even submitted a bugfix. I'll mention that for teaching I wrote a proposal for an internal grant to develop some Calculus worksheets & labs, and (to my surprise) won. I had worked a long time with labs in the nameless CAS so the grant made it worthwhile. It's worth a shot. john perry --~--~---------~--~----~------------~-------~--~----~ To post to this group, send email to sage-devel@googlegroups.com To unsubscribe from this group, send email to sage-devel-unsubscr...@googlegroups.com For more options, visit this group at http://groups.google.com/group/sage-devel URLs: http://www.sagemath.org -~----------~----~----~----~------~----~------~--~---
