I think I used the --enable-ecl, but it has been a while.

But did you see the latest email "Re: [Maxima] Maxima 5.17.0 release :
installation fails with Ecl"?

That sounds very much like it could solve the issue. If you get the
ecl build working in any way in CVS please let us know. I have
starting playing with the latest ecl since I want to help shaking out
the bugs for the next stable release. Gaby Dos Reis wanted to build an
OpenAxiom.spkg and he told me he greatly preferred ecl head over 0.9l,
so if there will be a new release it might be a good time to do some
wide testing.
