There is a version in BSD's portage that is de-gnuified, but I never
looked closely. I am not sure if we should change to use it, but as is
freetype is not changing much, so I would definitely consider it.

Well, it would clearly be a good thing to fix those issues. For now
when I work on Sage on FreeBSD or Solaris I just drop a renamed
gnumake into my toolchain directory. But any work on de-gnuing Sage's
components is certainly appreciated and will be merged.
