Certainly it is promotion. After all, one aim of my pages is to
present my computational results, which heavily rely on Sage.

But i was not sure whether the copyright for the banner is more
restrictive than for the software.

No, it is not about creating a new banner. It is just to have a nice
(but not too complicated!!) picture that you can click for following
the link. So, this is essentially what is done on http://www.sagemath.org/
too -- only in a different layout.
