I changed it and it did not work.

The issue seems to be ABI gets set to "32" when run from the normal
bash prompt and set to "standard" if run in the subshell. I think the
ABI is set with the aid of the script config.guess. That gives the
same output (core2-pc-solaris2.11) whether run from the normal bash
shell, or the subshell.

Sage subshell$ pwd
/export/home/drkirkby/sage-3.0.3.alpha0/spkg/build/gmp-4.2.2/src
Sage subshell$ ./config.guess
core2-pc-solaris2.11

I've yet to work out why the ABI gets set differently. I thought it
might be a result of the CPU type not being set to one of the
reconsided ones. (On my Blade 2000 config.guess reports ultrasparc3-
sun-solaris2.10). From discussions I've seen about GMP, it would
appear its not updated often, so I guess it will not know about core2
Duo PCs running Solaris.

Access to the laptop is less than 100% relieable, as it is physically
not here. I've loaned it to my Dad, so needs my ISP working, my Dads
ISP working, the WiFi link working at his end and him not switching it
off by accident!

I don't have one. I will contact you off list.
