Dear Sage developers,

One of the common themes that came out of the Community Survey
<https://groups.google.com/g/sage-devel/c/gSTiEPV2umk/m/tnCIoeoKAwAJ> this
summer was some dissatisfaction with our governance model. Personally, I
agree with much of the criticism: I think that relying on sage-devel votes
as our only codified mechanism for making decisions about the project is
unwieldy. I’d like to start a discussion about what alternatives might
look like.

I've created a new list, sage-government at googlegroups.com, which is open
for anyone to join. The purpose of having a separate list from sage-devel
is to encourage people interested in participating to opt in and then
contribute to the discussion, rather than lurking. To be clear, the
outcome of this discussion will hopefully be a proposal for a new
governance structure that will be brought to sage-devel for a vote. The
creation of this list does not change anything about how decisions are made
for the project.

I plan to send some initial emails to the new list in about a week, though
the history in the group will be visible if you don't end up joining until
later.

David
