Recent versions (10.3.*) of Sage have jupyterlab included, so it's a bit hard to tell what exactly is going on without seeing versions, etc. Conda seems to provide sage 10.2.
It could be that installation of jupyterlab on top of sage breaks something in the environment. Using 10.3.rc2 might be a better way.
