How about doing it the other way round? Use it for the other labels too. 
Why not do it completely without prefixes and use the /abc postfix to have 
convienient access to all labels. For example algebra /ca in stead of c: 
algebra, algebraic geometry /cag instead of c: algebraic geometry … Typing 
ca will give you all component labels starting with a and cat pulls algebraic 
topology to the first row.
