build isolation is nice. If python packaging says that what numpy does 
and sage is about to do is right, they are completely diverging from
traditional packaging. May be packagers have been wrong all along.

In a way, it mimics the way commercial closed packages tend to behave and
be distributed. And I don’t like that imitation one bit. It rubs me the
wrong way. Reading myself, I hope I am not turning into a “Richard Stallman”
but I am certainly opinionated and not afraid of it.
