The sparc box is 64 bit, I am just compiling in 32 bit mode. If I find
some time I will build in 64 bit mode, but then I need to build all
dependencies in 64 bit, too, so that would take a while.

I believe so, too. Especially since we both had the failure with gcc
4.2.x.
