The SAGE clisp *must* be built with readline support. If you don't do that, then, e.g., maxima_console() would not have readline support, which would be a very miserable experience. It's almost certainly possible to program around the readline problem in axiom.py by using some more complicated code there to synchronize things. That's probably the way to go.
