Assalamu aleikum ya AbdelMonam and all other brothers and sisters.

The way I see it, we must take into account the following:

         1 All the major distro’s that have survived, are backed by
some company or have another steady source of funding;

         2 All smaller distro’s that are run by volunteers, do tend
to disappear sooner or later, and most of them sooner;

         3 Finding a steady source of funding will also be an uphill
struggle, for the following reasons:

a. Because Linux in general has only a small user base, benefactors will
feel that they cannot reach enough people;

b. Companies and organisations will not make resources available (in terms
of dedicating people) for what they may see as a hobby;

c. Even charitable organisations require projects to be supported by
serious business plans. Although they would not be looking for profits in
monetary terms, they will want as many souls as possible to derive spiritual
benefits;

        4 For creating something viable, a dedicated foundation
would need to be set up:

a. The foundation would need to be controlled by a small group of elected
governors or guardians;

b. The governors would need to be elected by members of the foundation.
Suppose that members would be willing to pay a contribution of $5 a month, at
least 2000 members would be needed. And those members would still be expected
to provide development support for free;

c. The foundation would need to appoint a project leader, with at least
two deputies. They would probably cost anywhere between $5,000 and $10,000 a
month in total, depending on where they live;

d. The foundation would need to have a proper administrator/secretary, with
regular written reporting to the governors;

e. The foundation would need a considerable sum of start-up funds, for the
purpose of acquiring equipment and work spaces. Probably more than $10,000.

I mean this just as food for thought and pray that Allah will guide us. But
with only a handful of volunteers, no matter how knowledgeable and helpful, who
can do a few much appreciated bits and pieces in their spare time, we will not
be able to achieve what we like and are hoping for.

Any helpful opinions? Or should we just forget it, here and now, and each go
our own way?

The peace and blessings of Allah (SWT) to all of you.

Ma’assalama.

Exactly, the project has no longer a leader since Brothers Abdelmonam and Mehdi
became very busy.

I should think that nobody is able to allocate the very considerable amount of
time that is needed to really push it. It is not something that can be done ‘on
the side’, whilst also having a job or running a company.

There are only ‘helpers’, which is very nice and much appreciated, but there is
no ‘boss’.

Hey!

I sadly informing you that we lost the domain name.

The domain name expired and it was 'caught' (as they describe that in the
whois) by some auction website.. :(
