  I agree with what you are saying, yet we have a problem: we need to 
  patch a few applications that use the notification area (namely: 
  Minbar, Hijra applet & Monajat) to use Ubuntu's indicator framework. 
  The reason, is that in the Unity desktop environment, the notification 
  area is gone ! I have filed a couple of bugs [1] regarding this issue, 
  but unfortunately I can't find someone who is interested to do this 
  work.

  Please note, that we still have this issue, if a user is going to use 
  Gnome shell, which is part of Gnome3, but as far as I understand, one 
  does not have to use Gnome shell in order to use Gnome3.

  There is another issue (that I am not sure of) with Gnome3, that the 
  applications we have are linked against Gtk/Glib version 2, so if 
  versions 2 & 3 of those libraries are API compatible, then we do not 
  have a problem, we can just recompile against version 3, yet if they 
  are not API compatible, then that will mean that the live CD will 
  contain both version 2 & 3 of Gtk & Glib libraries.
