Hi Simeon, thanks a lot for posting this.  
I was having this exact problem.

I just submitted a pull request for s3cmd on github with this patch:
https://github.com/s3tools/s3cmd/pull/42

And until they accept the pull request (or don't), 
my version with the patch is linked from there.
